Scrambler becomes street legal
2015-01-28 - BMW R1100R Scrambler conversion by Hornig Our existing well-known
BMW R1100R Scrambler conversion was the start platform. To get the German street homologation we had to add many different parts. Our focus was to keep the original Scrambler look (as much as possible). So we designed every part under two aspects: functionality and unimposing. “Functionality” means that the parts will be confirm with German law. “Unimposing” means that the parts will be hidden on the bike, that we can keep the typical Scrambler look.
An example for this is our converted license plate holder (for German license plates). It is mounted on the right side of the bike and fulfils all legal restraints which are made by the German road traffic regulation. For example the height (position) of the license plate holder must be more than 15 cm above the street. The holder must also be mounted at a position where you can see it from the left and the right side (the angle is also mandatory by the German law: from each side of the license plate it must be readable in an angle of 15 degrees to the left and the right side).
We only installed parts with "E"-sign or another homologation, when it came to the rear light and the turning signals, so we could use it without any extra inspection from an official testing center. Here we used one of the smallest turning signals you can buy. In this way we tried to keep our design. For the same reason we hid the pilot lamps for the turning signals and the headlight in the mounting of the headlight.
Our mechanic worked about 8 hours on the additional parts. The parts were Euro 362,56. In total our Scrambler conversion would cost Euro 7661,66. In total we spent about 43 hours of work time.
Our R1100R Scrambler conversion is unique. Also most of the parts we installed are unique and handcrafted. The conversion and the reports about it are only guides for customers and every other person who likes to rebuild our Scrambler. Reproduction, further developments and improvements are welcome.
However, before you start with the conversion please contact your local testing center and talk with them about the homologation of such a conversion.
Before we started our conversion we contacted our local testing center and they explained which parts we need for the German street homologation.
